About our brand
Where We Come From
Established in 2022, Niana is a fashion brand rooted in the complex experience of living between places, cultures, and expectations. We create garments that reflect both where we are and where we come from; as we develop and grow, we aim to archive identity as its lived and snapshot the experiences of the Filipino diaspora.
For many in the diaspora, location becomes both a barrier and a birthplace. Migration puts distance between an individual and their homeland, measured in both generations and physical space. As a barrier, distance can wedge fears and disconnect. In birth, distance creates opportunity for identity to transform and and grow.
At Niana, we believe this distance is not a hole that needs repair, but a window with a view worth seeking. Our pieces are grounded in that duality: honoring the past while tracing the present, celebrating tradition and embracing transformation.
Design Philosophy: Preservation through Innovation
Niana exists at the intersection of traditional Filipino craft and contemporary technology, asking what happens when centuries-old textile traditions meet the tools of today. Our design philosophy is to honor culture by pushing it forward. Culture and traditions deserve more than to be frozen in time. Every piece we create is a conversation between what was and what could be.
The Barong Francisco
The Barong Francisco is our most defining work... and the most personal. We are the first and only brand to 3D-print a Barong Tagalog, the formal garment that has long been a symbol of Filipino identity and pride. Where traditional Barongs are distinguished by their intricate hand-embroidered burda, ours traces the skyline of San Francisco: the sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge, the height of Coit Tower, the geometry of the Transamerica Pyramid. The result is a garment that holds two cities, two histories, and two selves in a single silhouette: a love letter to the Filipino-American experience, stitched in light and resin.
The Niana Sleeves
Inspired by the iconic butterfly sleeve of the traditional Filipiniana, the Niana Sleeves reimagine one of the most recognizable silhouettes in Filipino fashion. Crafted from satin and silk batik, each sleeve carries the softness of ceremony and the boldness of self-expression. Where Philippine culture is often treated as costumes, we create cultural wear that is meant to be worn as accessories of identity, worn by people who know exactly where they come from and are unafraid of taking up space.
Our Mission
Niana exists for everyone who has ever been asked to choose between cultures, and refused. We make clothes for the hyphenate identity, the third culture babies... For the Filipino-American, the in-between, the both-and. Our mission is not to preserve the past, but to give it a future worth wearing.
